Welcome to the New South Wales Human Rights Education Committee.

The New South Wales Human Rights Education Committee (NSWHREC) was formed early in 2000 with the view to creating close links with the broader community. Its objectives reflect those of the National Committee. Human rights education is critical to maintaining and fostering a tolerant, just, equitable and democratic society. Fundamental to the work of the NSWHREC will be defining and re-examining human rights education in Australia and ensuring our community draws the greatest possible benefit from it. At the heart of human rights education is promotion of values and access to knowledge that can be summed up in the Australian ethos of 'a fair go for all'.

The NSWHREC works closely with the National Committee for Human Rights Education. On January 1, 1996, the National Committee for Human Rights Education joined 21 other countries in launching the United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education (1995-2004). The Australian Government responded by setting up a National Committee on Human Rights Education. The membership of the national committee is representative of a wide range of community interests whose members provide support to a variety of educational projects designed to promote wider community understanding of human rights. Recognising the importance of human rights education in Australia and the existing gaps in its delivery and coordination, a number of Australians with the support and encouragement of government agencies, business and community organisations have established a National Committee on Human Rights Education.

Six-weekly meetings are convened in the Posters for Peace Gallery at the Centre of Peace and Conflict Studies (CPACS), University of Sydney. The Executive Committee comprises: Dr Tim Marchant (NSWHREC secretary); Father Claude Mostowik (NSWHREC treasurer); Ann Hinton; Laurie & Peggy Craddock; Roger Wescombe; Jenny McNaughton; Lynette Simons and Vivianna Rodriguez Carreon (NSWHREC researcher). NSWHREC Founding Chair --Dr Stella Cornelius (Director of the Conflict Resolution Network) - is a key advisor.
